Plant Tour

The Bindery

Greetings and welcome to the Bindery. At the end of this tour you should be familiar, at least in theory, with the workings of the Bindery. We are the largest department at Friesens, that is, we take up the most floor space, and employ the most staff.

Bindery Staff

We have a staff of more than 100 people, operating on three shifts. We operate around the clock for five days. We have well-trained staff on all of our equipment . . . and our support staff is the best in the business.

Bindery Operation

If the Pressroom works with mountains of steel, the Bindery works with snakes of steel. Most of the equipment is configured in long serpentine lines of steel and rubber. Everything from the folders to the encaser to the shrinkwrappers takes up large amounts of space. Our department houses advanced machinery to accommodate almost every type of binding available in the business. As you will see in the tour, our equipment is up-to-date and state-of-the-art.

In a nutshell, the role of bindery is to turn printed press sheets into beautiful books. The first step in the process is folding. Each press sheet is comprised of a multiple of pages, typically 15 or 32. We take these sheets and fold them in the proper order so that the pages start at 1 and move up to 16 or 32. We call this folded sheet a signature.

The next step is to collate (arrange) these sections so that all the pages in the book are in the proper sequence. Once collated the signatures need to be bound together and a cover applied. Signatures can be glued or sewn and covers can be soft or hard. In special cases, books are bound with cerlox, wiro, etc., for special purposes.

For a more indepth discussion of all the various stages outlined above, please follow the links provided. In our tour you will see the following equipment and processes of our Bindery Department.

This is the grand tour of our major book making equipment. The balance of the tour (and you thought it was over), will show you our ever important support operations and specialty binding capabilities.

Supporting Equipment and Processes:

This concludes our on-line tour. We hope that we may have the opportunity to show you our production plant personally in the near future.
